MORPHOLOGY, HISTOLOGY AND FINE STRUCTURE Sexual Dimorphism of Basitarsi in Pest Species of Diabrotica and Cerotoma (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

چکیده
Sexual dimorphism in basitarsal pad morphology is described for prothoracic and mesothoracic legs ofDiabrotica virgifera virgiferaLeConte,Diabrotica barberiSmith&Lawrence, and Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardiBarber (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and for prothoracic legs of Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). On the indicated legs of these diabroticite beetles, the typical structure of the hairy tarsal pads of chrysomelid beetles is replaced proximally on tarsomere 1 of males by a hairless planar ovoid patch that may facilitate maintenance of themating posture of males upon the elytra of females. This basitarsal patch proved as reliable as the standard supra-anal plate character for establishing sex of these important crop pests.

Evaluating the accuracy of fine needle aspiration and frozen section based on permanent histology in patients with follicular lesions
Background: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) has led to a decrease in unnecessary surgeries for thyroid nodules. This study was designed to compare diagnostic value of FNA and frozen section methods in the follicular lesions. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study based on the medical records of 42 patients who were referred to surgery clinic of Rasool-e-Akram hospital in Tehran with complain...
متن کاملMORPHOLOGY, HISTOLOGY, AND FINE STRUCTURE Egg Morphology Varies Among Populations and Habitats Along a Suture Zone in the Lycaeides idas-melissa Species Complex (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)
Insect eggs are often characterized by an intricately sculptured external surface, which has been used to a limited extent as a taxonomic character, but not at all in comparisons among populations within a species or among populations of closely related species. We describe egg morphology by using scanning electron microscopy from 12 populations within a species complex of host-speciÞc butterßi...
متن کاملRetinal epithelial fine structure in the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops).
The morphology of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and closely associated Bruch's membrane (complexus basalis) and choriocapillaris have been investigated by electron microscopy in the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops). The RPE is composed of a single layer of cuboidal cells joined laterally by apically-located junctional complexes. Basally (sclerally) these cells display numerous info...
متن کاملFine structure of the pecten oculi in the great horned owl (Bubo virginianus).
The pecten oculi of the great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) has been examined by light and electron microscopy. The pecten in this species is of the pleated type and is small in comparison to the size of the eyeball. It consists of 7-8 accordion folds which are joined apically by a pigmented bridge of tissue. Within each fold are numerous capillaries, larger supply and drainage vessels and plen...
متن کاملAre Merkel and Grandry cells two varieties of the same cell in birds?
For over a century it has been held that the Grandry corpuscle and the Merkel corpuscle are unique sensory organs in aquatic and nonaquatic birds, respectively. In other words, the Grandry and the Merkel cells are two varieties of the same receptor cell and never coexist together. Contrary to what has been believed, we found unmistakable Merkel cells in addition to Grandry cells in the lingual ...
